What does Synthetic mean in terms of Motor Oil?
The term synthetic refers to the base stock the oil is made from. Base stocks comprise the majority of a motor oils makeup and are the foundation of an oils performance. The rest of the oil is made up of the additives.
Base stocks are defined by the American Petroleum Institute in groups. The groups are I, II, II+, III, IV & V. For the most part the quality of the oil increases with the number. I.e. A group V base stock oil is a higher quality then a group I base stock oil. In fact the term synthetic generally refers to group IV and V oils historically but now includes some group III oils as well.

What are the advantages to a full synthetic oil change?
With increasing quality comes increased ability for the oil to lubricate, increased cold and hot weather performance and a reduction in overall friction and thus increased fuel economy. All of these are good things for an engine because motor oil is the most critical aspect of an engines performance and longevity.
What does this mean for my oil change?
If your vehicle requires full synthetic then it's a good idea to follow the manufacturers recommendation. Full synthetic is made from the higher end base stocks. Additionally, many newer vehicles have variable valve timing and need the proper oils to work effectively. The motor oil is used in the variable valve timing system as a hydralic fluid to control the timing.
Can I use synthetic oil if my manufacturer just recommends regular oil?
Yes you can use synthetic oil in most any vehicle. Do you need to use synthetic oil? No, but using it will increase the chances of the motor running better and cleaner for longer; it may even save you some gas along the way with reduced overall friction in the motor.
Is a synthetic blend a good compromise for most cars that don't specifically require a full synthetic oil?
Yes a synthetic blend is a good compromise because it has some of the characteristics of a synthetic oil but costs less. This is why Rapid Mobile Oil Change in Hamilton Montana uses a synthetic blend as our most common oil. It is the oil we suggest most times and use extensively.
